What is normal
- In the beginning it can bleed a little, there can be some local swelling, tenderness or small bruises.
- When healing a bit of discoloration can happen, itching, transparant/yellowish flouid can accumulate some scabs around the jewelry. The tissue can feel a bit tight around the piercing when healing.
- When the piercing is healed it should be possible to move the jewelry freely through the pierced skin. It should not be nessesary to pull or force the movement of the jewelry.
- If the cleaning isn't a part of your daily routine, the piercing can start to smell due to the accumulation of flouids, build-up of dead skin etc.
- The piercing can sometimes feel healed before the healingsprocess has ended. This is because the tissue heals from the outside and in, which means that it can look and feel completely healed, but still be very fragile on the inside.
- Healed piercings can shrink or close itself in a few minutes even years after getting the piercing. This varies from person to person. If you are content with your piercing, let the jewelry stay in and don't take the jewelry out over longer peiods of time.
Especially for ear piercings
- Dress your pillow in a large, clean t-shirt and turn it nightly; one clean t-shirt provides four clean surfaces for sleeping.
- Keep headphones, glasses, telephones, helmets, hats etc., that touches the piercing and the area around the piercing clean.
- Be very careful when styling your hair.
Do
- Always wash your hands before you touch the piercing.
- Try to optain a healthy lifestyle. The healthier you live, the easier it is for your body to heal. Get lots of sleep and eat healthy. Exercising while healing is okay.
- Mare sure that your bed linen is washed and changed regularly.
- Use clean, comfortable and breathable clothes when your sleeping to protect your piercing.
- Remember to tighten your internally threaded jewelry by turning right. With threadless ends, make sure that the end is sitting flush with your jewelry at all times, by pressing down on the end.
Don't
- Don't play with your piercing! Under the healing periode you shouldn't rotate the jelwery.
- Don't rinse your new piercing too often, because this delays the healingprocess and will create irritation.
- Have patience! Don't change your jewelry by yourself before your piercing is completely healed.
- Don't use products containing alcohol, chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide. Refrain from antibacterial soaps. This will damage the cells, and slow the healing.
- Don't use jewelry with pendants or similar in your piercing before it is fully healed.
- Avoid public swimming pools or bathing in seawater for at least 4 weeks.
- Avoid sunbathing the first 4 - 6 weeks.
